Glean was founded in 2019 as an early player in enterprise AI. Today, it’s a 1,500-person company that has surpassed $300M in annual recurring revenue (ARR).
I recently had the opportunity to host Arvind Jain, Glean’s founder and CEO, at Icons for the second time, three years after our first conversation.
What fascinated me most wasn’t how much Glean has grown, but how Arvind thinks about staying ahead in a market where the rules change almost overnight.
Here are six insights from our conversation:
1. Competition is irrelevant when the market is this big. For every AI idea, ten other startups are pursuing it. But even if you combined every tech company in the world, they couldn’t meet all enterprise AI needs. The opportunity is enormous.
2. Moats are overrated. Arvind has never believed in traditional moats. What matters is continuous innovation, understanding your customers better than anyone, and building relationships competitors can’t easily replicate.
3. Be willing to make your own product obsolete. When MCP commoditized some of Glean’s integration advantages, they embraced it and moved up the value chain. The lesson: build a company that benefits when underlying AI models improve, rather than one threatened by their progress.
4. The best companies reinvent themselves constantly. In 2023, Glean was creating a category. Today, it competes with some of the biggest names in technology. That requires a completely different product strategy and sales motion.
5. The next frontier is proactive AI. Today’s AI largely waits for instructions. Arvind believes the real breakthrough comes when AI understands your work, anticipates your needs, and acts without being prompted. That’s how AI moves beyond power users.
6. The CEO must never lose touch with the product. Even at Glean’s scale, Arvind sees recruiting, product, and business as his three core responsibilities. His advice to product founders: protect a third of your time for product. Sales will consume all of it if you let it.
Thank you, Arvind, for coming back and sharing your thoughts. A fascinating conversation with someone building one of the defining companies of the AI era.
